This portfolio is designed to demonstrate my academic accomplishments during the Master in Public Health (MPH) Program at San Francisco State University (SFSU). I hope to provide you with a sense the skills and interests I’ve refined during my studies.
The MPH program at SFSU is focused on community practice and social justice. As such, I had the opportunity to collaborate with a non-profit community organization, Legal Services for Prisoners with Children, for a year and a half to conduct an assessment of the healthcare of pregnant prisoners, develop a program plan with an evaluation component, as well as write a grant proposal to the California Endowment. For my summer internship I worked at The Harvard School of Public Health conducting an assessment of low income housing pesticide policies in an effort to inform the methodology and approach of a larger longitudinal study.
For my senior MPH project I studied the extent to which the desire and pleasure of adolescent girls were incorporated into sexual health education. This was in an effort to aknowledge the positive health implications of desire and pleasure and highlight gender inequalities with regard to sexual health education.
Throughout my masters I have also worked as a Research Associate with the San Francisco Department of Public Health in the Program on Health, Equity, and Sustainability. Working on an innovative land use and health team, we spent a year and a half implementing a Community Health Impact Assessment (HIA) with over 20 comnunity organizations. The culmination of this HIA was an evidence-based tool to evaluate the health, social, and economic impacts of land use policies and projects. Currently, I am working on analyzing the impacts of a 3000-unit residential development project in the Bayview/Hunter's Point region of San Francisco.
In the past year, I have also worked as a lecturer in the SFSU Health Education Department (HED). I have taught the undergraduate Environmental Health (HED 418) and Research Methods (HED 425) courses. Prior to teaching I served as a teaching assistant for two years for HED 418.
These are just a few of the diverse experiences where I have had the opportunity to work with a variety of communities, merging theory with practice, as I gain a diverse set of skills and work towards a social justice agenda. My work is grounded in a holistic, ecological approach, while my passion for justice and equity help form my perspective.
I hope you enjoy exploring my portfolio and learning more about my work. Please feel free to contact me with any questions that may arise.
